New Zealand to become a police state by stealth

MR NEWS's picture

Whenever I hear the term, fascist police state, I am always just a little dubious about such claims, preferring to believe as most Kiwis do, 'Nah, not here mate.'

But, this last week I have become extremely nervous of the new laws that are being slipped in quietly under our noses, using the tool of parliamentary urgency. And what staggers me, is the opposition parties are barely making a squeak about these things. I refer folks, to amendments to a law that by design, was meant to protect us from the police becoming a political force.

This last week, under urgency, the Policing (Involvement in Local Authority Elections) Amendment Bill was passed, quietly and under the media radar.

On reading, this bill might seem quite innocuous but it could well be one of the most significant changes in New Zealands political history. http://www.legislation.govt.nz/bill/government/2010/0168/latest/DLM30133... This bill allows our police to form their own political party and stand for local body elections.

So what?

Well it means that now cops don't just enforce our laws, they now have the potentials to make our laws and that is purely dangerous.

Yeah but it's only at local body level so what's the big deal?

Don't blink, this bill is just one inch away from police taking a far more active role in central government politics and they are already exerting significant political pressures on parliament now, to get what they want. The door has been opened for the police to become a powerful political entity, having influence across the entire NZ political spectrum.

Would we allow our armed services to launch their own parties? Not on your nallie mate, not now, not ever, that would be dumb!

Military rules and laws prevent our armed services from taking any active role in politics. They must stand apart and actually have the right of refusal to act for government, if those orders received are contrary in the military mind, to be acting for the good of the New Zealand people. Even at the most basic level of our Army, a grunt on the ground is not encouraged to have a political view. These rules are wise for some obvious reasons, they guard against the use of our services as political pawns and seeks to prevent our services from ever taking political power. The Police, are our other armed service. Over recent years, they have carried out a process, using fear based propaganda, that seeks to disarm our population. Even in the case of self defence, step over the mark defined by our police, you will as a victim of crime, find yourself in the courts having to answer police charges yourself. It is fundamentally stupid to have a situation where the only armed people in a society, are the police.

Well how come the cops aren't under the same rules as the military, that would make sense wouldn't it?

Well duh yes...But here's how it went. The police once upon a time were governed by similar rules. We functionally had four services, army, air force, navy and police, all under defence. Under previous National governments, things have changed. The police gained their own separate ministry, under the stewardship of Minister Ross Meurant, an ex cop who infamously invented the Red Squad during his service and later as a politician, bought up surplus NZ army assault weapons, to sell to anyone who wanted them on the open market. There's a moral man eh! Ross completely redesigned the police force. Our force was once modelled on the English service, some of us will remember when we had community policing of the old style and some Bobbies still actually rode round on bicycles. Meurant dumped this model and travelled to, of all places, Los Angeles, to study policing methods there. This completely irrelevant model to the New Zealand experience was introduced, so now we have police running round like paramilitaries and a highly politicised police force, who are well skilled in manipulating the media and government to get what they want. So you see the dangers folks, of cops either serving or retired, having anything to do with politics. These new amendments to a bill that was meant to protect us, is an outrageous turn of events. National has bent a good law, 180 degrees to face the opposite direction.

So, to give things some context. This new bill allowing cops to enter politics combined with new laws allowing a cop to take a DNA sample, if they merely suspect you of a crime, even from a child. New laws relating to search warrants, where a cop can enter your home and take anything they want, whether or not the items have anything at all to do with the crime the are actually investigating. And oh, most horrifying of all, the SS bill (search & surveillance bill), allowing the police and other agencies to actively spy on it's own people, without need for warrant, for any reason they see fit, with no checks by any authority and without any need to inform anyone of what they are doing. This is madness and madness if we allow it, any of these new laws. We as New Zealanders can now truly say, we live in a fascist police state. It is the simple truth of the matter, no matter how our politicians and police try to flavour the lolly pop, to make it more palatable. Here's a prediction, the timing of the current police commissioner, Mr Broads retirement announcement. I smell a rat, you don't think he is considering going into politics do you?

Community Co has launched a petition, to have this bizarre Policing (Involvement in Local Authority Elections) Amendment Bill immediately repealed and to voice the collective displeasure of our people over these other fascist attempts to control us and attack our fundamental rights to privacy.

We hope you will all give support to the new petition and anyone interested in taking part in a demonstration over these matters, may contact us through the message system here, giving your first name and email address. The petition link is http://comco.20toes.net/ss.html
